Project Story
Therma-Tru Smooth-Star Craftsman Front Door Replacement
AMG Doors & Windows replaced a dark six-panel entry door and decorative narrow sidelite at this Redwood City, CA home with a Therma-Tru Smooth-Star Craftsman Lite 2-Panel Shaker fiberglass door and a matching 10-inch full-lite privacy sidelite.
1. Project Overview
The service, brand, and reason for replacement
AMG Doors & Windows replaced a dark six-panel entry door and decorative narrow sidelite at this Redwood City, CA home with a Therma-Tru Smooth-Star Craftsman Lite 2-Panel Shaker fiberglass door and a matching 10-inch full-lite privacy sidelite.
2. Homeowner Pain Points
What the homeowner was dealing with
The original entry was a dark six-panel door paired with a narrow decorative leaded-glass sidelite. It closed off the entry visually and made the foyer feel dim, and the clear decorative sidelite offered little privacy from the porch. The homeowners wanted a brighter, more current Craftsman look at the front of the house, more daylight in the entry, and glass they did not have to cover.
3. AMG Solution
What AMG Doors & Windows installed
AMG installed a single prehung Therma-Tru Smooth-Star fiberglass entry system with a 10-inch sidelite on the right side, right-hand inswing, in a 3/0 x 6/8 door size built to the home's custom rough-opening height. The door is the Craftsman Lite 2-Panel Shaker style, flush-glazed with Chinchilla 6-Lite privacy glass and flat-profile simulated divided lites. The sidelite is a 10-inch full-lite, flush-glazed Satin Etch privacy unit with no grilles. The system was supplied unfinished for field painting, so the surface seen in the completed photos is ready for final painting and touch-up by others.
Local Insight
Before: Original Entry Door
The home started with a dark six-panel entry door and a narrow decorative leaded-glass sidelite. The panel layout and dark color made the entry read as closed off from the street, and inside the foyer the door absorbed most of the available light. The sidelite's clear decorative glass was the only daylight source at the door, and it offered very little privacy from the porch. Everything about the opening — the door, the sidelite proportion and the glass — was working against the brighter Craftsman entry the homeowners had in mind.
What We Installed
What AMG Doors & Windows installed
For this Redwood City, CA project AMG installed a Therma-Tru Smooth-Star fiberglass entry system: a single prehung Craftsman Lite 2-Panel Shaker door, right-hand inswing, with a 10-inch full-lite privacy sidelite on the right side.
4. Installation Details
How AMG installed this front door
Installation included removal and disposal of the old door, installation of the new prehung system, 1x4 interior trim and 1x2 exterior trim, low-expansion foam insulation around the frame, premium OSI exterior sealant, final adjustment, testing, cleanup and debris removal. The door was set in a 4-9/16-inch composite smooth jamb with bronze weatherstrip and a bronze Tru-D composite adjustable sill, hung on black residential hinges, and prepped double bore with deadbolt bore so the homeowner's own handle set could be fitted during installation.
5. Final Result
The improvement for the homeowner
The finished entry reads completely differently from the street. The Craftsman Lite Shaker door brings a clean two-panel face with a 6-lite band of Chinchilla privacy glass across the top, and the 10-inch Satin Etch sidelite replaces the narrow decorative unit with a full-height column of soft light. Inside, the foyer picks up daylight from both the door glass and the sidelite while nothing from the porch is visible through either. The light, paint-ready surface takes the entry from dark and closed to bright and current.
Why we recommended this product:
A Smooth-Star fiberglass door gives this San Mateo County entry a paint-ready surface with the crisp Craftsman/Shaker panel profile the homeowners wanted, and the privacy glass package lets daylight into the foyer without opening a clear view in from the porch. Pairing the Chinchilla door glass with a Satin Etch sidelite keeps the two obscured glass elements working together instead of competing.
Homeowner Goals
The homeowners had three priorities for this entry: more natural light in the foyer, real privacy at the front of the house, and a Craftsman look that fit the home rather than the builder-standard six-panel door it came with. They also wanted to choose and supply their own handle set, and to have the door finished on site so the paint color could be decided with the rest of the exterior. Every specification on this project traces back to one of those goals.
Front Door Replacement in Redwood City
AMG Doors & Windows handles front door replacement in Redwood City, CA and across San Mateo County, including Menlo Park, San Carlos, Belmont, Atherton and Woodside. Peninsula homes span everything from Mount Carmel bungalows to newer construction, and entry openings are rarely truly standard — this project needed a custom rough-opening height, which is exactly the kind of detail we confirm by measuring in the home before anything is ordered. Every consultation starts at your entry, with the door, jamb, sill and trim conditions checked in person.

Frequently Asked
Questions about this project
How much privacy does Chinchilla and Satin Etch glass actually give you?+
Both are obscured privacy glass, so they pass daylight without giving a clear view through. Chinchilla has a rippled texture that breaks up shapes in the door's 6-lite Craftsman opening, and the Satin Etch sidelite is a soft frosted surface. From the porch you see light and movement, not detail — which is what let this homeowner add a full-lite sidelite instead of the narrow decorative one that was there before.
Why does a composite jamb matter on a front entry door?+
The jamb is the frame the door hangs in, and it sits closest to the sill where water and moisture collect. A 4-9/16-inch composite jamb does not absorb water the way traditional wood jamb legs can, so the bottom of the frame is far less likely to swell, soften or rot over the years. It also holds the hinge and strike screws securely, which keeps the door hanging and latching correctly.
What does an adjustable sill do?+
The Tru-D composite adjustable sill has a cap that can be raised or lowered with a screwdriver. That lets the installer tune the contact between the sill and the door's bottom sweep — tight enough to seal against drafts and blown rain, loose enough that the door does not drag. It can also be readjusted later as the house and the door settle.
What should I expect during a front entry door replacement?+
Most single entry doors like this one are a one-day project. The old door is removed and hauled away, the opening is prepped, the new prehung unit is set level and plumb, then insulated and sealed. Interior and exterior trim goes on, hardware is fitted, and the door is adjusted and tested before the crew cleans up and removes the debris. Your entry is open only while the new unit is being set.
Was this door painted at the factory?+
No. This unit was supplied unfinished, matching the field-finished option on the signed agreement. Smooth-Star fiberglass takes paint well, and final painting and touch-up on this project were handled by others after installation.
