The Homeowner’s Problem

A dated rear entry that no longer fit the home

The rear kitchen entry still had its original white door with diamond-grid glass and a crossbuck lower panel — a look that had fallen out of step with the rest of the home. Photographed before the work began, the door and the storm door in front of it showed their age, with a worn painted finish and a tired-looking frame that did nothing for the back-of-house curb appeal.

The small, heavily divided glass panel also limited how much daylight reached the kitchen entry. With an aging exterior door, the homeowner was thinking about the things every homeowner thinks about at an exterior opening: how well it seals against Contra Costa County weather, how secure and solid it feels day to day, and how long it will last before it needs work again. Rather than patch and repaint an old unit, they wanted a stronger, better-sealing replacement that would look intentional and stay low-maintenance.

Our Door Replacement Solution

A complete pre-hung steel entry system

AMG Doors & Windows removed the old door and frame and installed a complete pre-hung ProVia Legacy 20-gauge smooth steel entry system — not a slab swap. Replacing the door, jamb, sill and weatherstripping together is what allows the opening to be set plumb and square, insulated and sealed, so the door closes and latches the same way every time.

The Craftsman 420 two-panel design was finished in #57 Deep Waters on the exterior with #132 Snow Mist on the interior and frame, and glazed with clear ComforTech DLA-UV glass behind a cottage six-lite internal grid. Aged-bronze ball-bearing hinges carry the door, and AMG supplied and installed the handle and lock hardware.

This is typical of our steel entry door installation work as an exterior door contractor in Contra Costa County: measure the opening, order the door built to it, and install it as one system. See more ProVia door options or browse front door replacement for your own home.

Installation Process

  1. 1Measured the existing rear kitchen opening and confirmed size, jamb depth and handing before ordering.
  2. 2Ordered the ProVia Legacy entry system built to the opening in the selected colors, glass and grid.
  3. 3Removed the old door and frame and prepared the opening.
  4. 4Set the new pre-hung unit plumb, level and square, then shimmed and fastened it.
  5. 5Insulated the perimeter with low-expansion foam and sealed the exterior.
  6. 6Installed AMG-supplied handle and lock hardware and adjusted the door for smooth operation and consistent closing.

Homeowner Benefits

What this upgrade means day to day

20-Gauge Steel Strength

ProVia's Legacy series uses heavy 20-gauge steel — thicker than the lighter-gauge steel common on builder-grade doors — for a solid, secure-feeling entry.

Insulated Glass, More Daylight

Clear ComforTech DLA-UV insulated glass brings daylight into the kitchen entry while providing insulated-glass performance the old single-glazed panel could not.

Weather Sealing That Fits

Replacing the full pre-hung unit — door, jamb and weatherstripping together — lets the entry seal and close consistently instead of relying on an old, worn frame.

Factory-Finished Color

The #57 Deep Waters exterior and #132 Snow Mist interior are applied at the factory, so the color is even and doesn't depend on jobsite painting.

Lower Maintenance

A steel entry door with a factory finish avoids the repainting and refinishing cycle an aging wood door usually needs in the Bay Area climate.

Professional Fit and Operation

The door was set plumb and square, insulated and sealed, then hung on aged-bronze ball-bearing hinges for smooth everyday operation.

Front Door Replacement in Pleasant Hill, CA

Serving Pleasant Hill and Contra Costa County

Many Pleasant Hill homes still have their original exterior doors at the back of the house, where a dated slab, a thin frame and an aging storm door tend to stay in place long after the front entry has been updated. A ProVia Legacy door is a practical answer at those openings: steel construction, factory-applied color and insulated glass in one pre-hung unit.

AMG Doors & Windows handles steel entry door installation across Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek, Concord, Martinez and Lafayette. As an exterior door contractor in Contra Costa County, we measure, order and install — so an energy-efficient entry door arrives built to your opening instead of being trimmed to fit on site. Questions

Pleasant Hill entry door FAQs

What door was installed on this Pleasant Hill project?

AMG Doors & Windows installed a ProVia Legacy 20-gauge smooth steel entry door in the Craftsman 420 two-panel design, 2/8 x 6/8 with a 4-1/4 inch jamb and left-hand inswing, with clear ComforTech DLA-UV glass, a cottage six-lite internal grid, a #57 Deep Waters exterior, a #132 Snow Mist interior and frame, aged-bronze ball-bearing hinges and AMG-supplied handle and lock hardware.

Why replace the whole pre-hung unit instead of just the door slab?

A full pre-hung replacement includes the door, jamb and weatherstripping as one system. That lets the opening be set plumb and square and sealed properly, which is what makes a new exterior door close, latch and seal consistently over time.

Is a steel entry door a good choice for a rear kitchen entry?

Steel is a common choice for secondary and rear entries because 20-gauge steel is strong, holds a factory finish well and needs less upkeep than a painted wood door. Adding insulated glass with a grid keeps daylight in the room.
